Valerie Woods is a 101-acre parcel of land located at the southwest corner of Turner Rd. and Philadelphia Dr. in Harrison Township, Ohio (in Montgomery County). It is a truly unique and wondrous piece of property that is composed of an old-growth beech-maple forest, a nationally recognized wetlands, a limestone ravine with a 15 ft. waterfall, beautiful meadows, and a wide variety of plant and animal life. It is an amazing work of nature that is a rare find in today's urbanized communities. Valerie Woods was purchased in the fall of 1998 by the Harrison Township Trustees. The Trustees are planning to use several acres of the land to build a new fire station to replace the outdated fire station that is currently located at the corner of Markey Rd. and Main St. The Trustees have also indicated a desire to subdivide and sell off the rest of the land for development purposes. Some of the types of development that have been mentioned include single family dwellings, multi-family dwellings (apartments), office buildings, and light industrial development. The members of the Friends of Valerie Woods, while supporting the new fire station, oppose any location of the fire station that threatens the current and future stability of the Valerie Woods ecosystem. Click here to see a map of the possible fire station locations as identified in the Woolpert Consultants' Fire Station Siting Study. The Friends of Valerie Woods feel that if a fire station must be built on the property, the location that would be best for causing minimal long term damage to Valerie Woods is site #1 (Turner Rd.). While the Friends of Valerie Woods would support the new fire station in an acceptable location, the group strongly opposes any further development of the Valerie Woods property. The current sentiment within the group and among a large number of Township residents is that the property should be maintained in a natural state as a combination nature preserve, educational nature lab for local schools, and family nature center. |
